The value of art?

Where does the value of art lay? It does not seem to be in the art itself. If it were, then we would not say that a work that was valued at, say, one million dollars yesterday is worth zero dollars today when it is discovered not to be the work of some deceased famous person but instead by an unknown person who can accurately duplicate the former's style.

Similarly, the value does not lie with the artist itself. Otherwise, both artists' works would be equally celebrated.

Artwork produced by so-called artificial intelligence seems to be even less valued for a multitude of reasons: theft, lack of skill, and lack of agency, to name a few.

So tell me where does the value of art lie?
